Cyberpunk 2077 sales hit 13 million post refunds

CD Projekt Red has said that its Cyberpunk 2077 has sold 13 million copies by December, after the company announced full refunds to customers

CD Projekt Red has gone on record saying that it has sold 13 million copies of its controversial Cyberpunk 2077 game by December 20, a figure which takes into consideration the number of refund requests the company has received. This positive news for the developer comes after the enormous backlash received by the game due to persistent quality niggles, bug troubles, and poor player feedback.

CD Projekt Red Cyberpunk 2077 Sales figure

CD Projekt Red had announced via a regulatory filing earlier this week that these figures represent the estimated volume of retail sales across all hardware platforms, also factoring in returns submitted by retail clients in brick-and-mortar as well as digital storefronts, often referred to as the sell-through figure, as all refund requests were e-mailed directly to the company.

The studio’s awaited sales update, however, does not include information about the scale of refunds themselves but mentions the net sales number. Readers will recall that Cyberpunk 2077 was so plagued by glitches that Sony pulled the title from its PlayStation store while Microsoft offered full refunds for Xbox users.

Post-crisis market status of CD Projekt Red

As per a survey conducted by nine analysts at Bloomberg, the sales figure amounts to around half of the 12-month sales forecast, which was predicted before Sony removed the game from its store. The highly-anticipated game had more than eight million pre-orders before the December 10 debut. This naturally elicited a legitimate online turmoil from players, who were frustrated with its poor performance, thereby causing a massive dip in CD Projekt’s share price.

CD Projekt advanced 4.6% in Warsaw on Tuesday before the sales update was published. Since its peak on December 4, the company has lost 40% of its market value, or about 18 billion zloty or around $5 billion. However, with the sales numbers spelling optimism, CD Projekt Red sees to finally have something to cheer about.
