OpenAI FIVE: Bots Against Professional Players

Artificial Intelligence is touching new milestones every year. From pre-defined learning to understanding the concepts, Open AI has come up with OpenAI Five which will be up for a drive in The International 2018.

OpenAI Five is a 5 Bot Team which is said to be capable of defeating any amateur teams. The International will see the OpenAI FiVe be competing against one of the top tier professional teams to showcase whether an AI is better than calculative minds of the professional players.

OpenAI was first introduced in the Season TI7 when during the event, crowd favorite “Dendi” had his match against OpenAI. The earlier version of OpenAI only had a Solo 1v1 AI network. We had seen lots of professional players losing to the OpenAI in the starting phases when the system was introduced. Slowly but steadily, the top players picked up their pace and started utilizing the rhythm at which OpenAI bots played to secure their win.

Consequently, the competition is up again but against a team comprising OpenAI bots coordinating with each other for the goal of destroying enemy team throne.

OpenAI aims at developing systems which solve complex video games which in turn will be highly general, with applications outside of games.

To figure out how the OpenAI FIVE system works in a competitive scene against human players, a lot of matches had been conducted against amateur teams. “Blitz”, one of the top commentators for DOTA 2, talked about his experience of watching OpenAI bots playing against human players.
Team fight coordination of the bot team showed great merit. The single bots don’t play on an overall selfish algorithm but also in coordination with the complete team moving forward for a goal.

The International 8 is scheduled for Aug 24, we will be seeing OpenAI FIVE competing against professional players in the Arena. Will OpenAI FIVE be capable of defeating the professional minds in international gaming scene, or the bots will need more time to learn and analyze the situations and strategies of human mind! We will get our answers at TI 8.
