It has been widely seen that many players have been playing the PS4 versions of cross-gen games on the PS5 without realizing it. In fact early PS5 adopters were finding that their new console often directed automatically to the PS4 version of games by default.
A boon for gamers
Sony has now added a warning notification that will help players figure out what version of the game they are playing. The notification prompt reads that if a player is about to play the PS4 version of this game, Sony will display a notification for them if they are willing to switch to the PS5 version. The system will then offer the player an option to download or play the PS4 version if they want or switch to the PS5 version.
As per reports, this issue was noticed by players who were accidentally playing the PS4 version of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War on the PS5. The problem impacted primarily those gamers who had downloaded or purchased the cross-gen bundle or the Ultimate Edition of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War that included both versions.
A new-gen solution
This initiative by Sony can surely be termed as a viable method to allow players have a seamless playing experience across consoles. However, Microsoft seems to have done it smarter with the Xbox Series X and S via their Smart Delivery option. The library on Microsoft’s next-gen consoles will show games that have been optimized for the Xbox Series X and S will feature a badge signifying so. When a player starts playing the game, the console will automatically pick the best version.
